2、e easing of inflationary pressures enabled central banks to begin loosening monetary policy,albeit not as rapidly as some may have forecast at the start of last year.However,major geopolitical events,including a year which saw more than half the global population participate in elections,and weaker-
3、than-expected GDP growth in some regions continued to present challenges.Despite these issues,corporates and private equity(PE)houses in Europe targeted more high-value and strategic targets,with an increase in the volume and value of megadeals.However,across the value spectrum,dealmaking proved to
4、be an essential tool as boards realigned their business strategies to contend with changing market conditions.Several notable trends either emerged or were affirmed in 2024 in the European market.Digital transformation and technological innovation remain perhaps the single most important deal driver
5、,with the mainstreaming of artificial intelligence heralding a potential inflection point for how many,if not most,businesses operate.The energy transition is also shaping M&A,with major renewables deals increasingly featuring among the largest energy transactions.In markets in Southern Europe,inves
6、tments in solar,wind and green hydrogen projects are garnering significant interest.That said,in some quarters of the region,attitudes towards sustainability-driven dealmaking and environmental,social and governance(ESG)initiatives more generally became less sympathetic in 2024.Though some businesse
