Domestic renewable energy targets by selected countries and ASEAN region in the STEPS, 2005-2050
Ensuring that new demand is met in an affordable, secure and sustainable way is imperative for the future prosperity of the region. For the moment, coal is the largest source of electricity generation in Southeast Asia, but there are cost- effective ways to diversify the mix, including development of the region's Asia, but various regulatory, political, financial and technical challenges continue participation, fossil fuel subsidies, ineffective procurement frameworks and high contexts. As a consequence, most countries in Southeast Asia remain in the early stages of integrating variable renewable energy resources for power generation, specifically for solar photovoltaics (PV) and wind. Nevertheless, ambitions are high and underpinned by firm political commitments: emissions or carbon neutrality. Positive traction for renewables is clearly emerging as countries accelerate deployment through renewed targets, maturing procurement procedures and market reforms. Solar, wind and battery storage are Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and Cambodia; multiple rounds of successful electricity directly to corporate consumers in Viet Nam and Malaysia.
