According to a survey on marine artisanal fisheries carried out jointly by PRODUCE and IMARPE, over 95% of total employment in fishing activities in 2022 was in the artisanal sector. The total number of artisanal fishers has almost tripled since 1995 (first records available), from 28 000 to 75 500 in 2022. Most of the increase has 0ccurred since 2004 when the survey identified 37 700 fishers (IMARPE, 2024[19). However, a large share of this increase is most likely related to better identification and registration of fishers (see below), rather than new fishers entering the workforce.
