In Europe, wind and hydropower North America, the energy mix was similar to Europe, with hydropower and wind contributing around 600 TWh, compared to just 60 TWh from bioenergy. solid waste, established itself as the main renewable energy source consumed in the heating and cooling sector in the EU, accounting for 75% of all renewable energy consumed in this category. Of the total 112 Mtoe of renewable energy used for heating and cooling, bioenergy contributed 85 Mtoe. The vast majority of this (79 Mtoe) came from solid biofuels, which alone account for 70% of the renewable heat and cooling market. Bioenergy significantly outperformed other renewable alternatives; heat pumps, the second largest renewable source, provided 19 Mtoe, followed by minor contributions from solar thermal and other renewable technologies.
