On the domestic side, domestic credit to the private sector grew rapidly, but it has withdrawn relative to global distribution and the financial sector is now more exposed to the sovereign. Although adequate for its level of income and experiencing rapid growth as a percentage of GDP,9 Kenya's credit to the private sector remains relatively small compared to aspirational, regional, and 20 years ago; while in 2001 Kenya's domestic credit to the private sector was on the 48th percentile 9 Domestic credit to the private sector grew from 25.2 percent of GDP in 2010 to 31.6 percent of GDP in 2023.
