necessitates importance of effective land and water management in sugarcane cultivation. Sugarcane cultivation requires significantly higher input levels due to its long growth duration, and the cost of production has been increasing over time (Upreti, 2017). Producing a single kilogram of sugar consumes approximately 1,600 to 2,000 litres of water, which translates to around 2,860 Litres of water needed to produce one liter of ethanol from sugar (Scholten, 2009). In Maharashtra, sugarcane is grown on only 6%o of the state's cultivable land but accounts for 7o%o of the state's total irrigation demand. This, combined with the irrigation water, results in Maharashtra experiencing higher cultivation costs compared to states sustainability of sugarcane cultivation in such regions (Mongabay, 2022)
