The chapter offers an overview of research and innovation (R&l) activities, funding mechanisms and key partnerships in the bioenergy sector, particularly in relation to European initiatives. It highlights the role of various networks, the funding allocated to support technological progress and the allocates EUR 92 million for bioenergy projects (European Commission, 2024, calls HORIZON-CL5- 2023-D3-02-01,HORIZON-CL5-2024-D3-01-03, HORIZON-CL5-2024-D3-01-05,HORIZON-CL5- address critical needs. In 2020, the Joint Undertaking called for funding key technologies such as big data, geographic information systems, sensors, artificial intelligence (Al), the Internet of Things, and prediction algorithms to increase availability and sustainability in the bio-based industry, with projects reaching TRL 4-5 (European Commission, 2020). In 2023, the Circular Bio-based Europe address availability, sourcing, logistics, and infrastructure challenges in biomass feedstock supply
